What Causes Frown Lines and Forehead Wrinkles?
Frown lines are the vertical lines between your eyebrows, often called "the elevens." Forehead lines run across it. Both come from the muscles that raise the brows and pull them together.
Lines that show only when you move are called dynamic. Lines that stay when your face is relaxed are static. Which of the two you have changes what your provider suggests.
How these lines are usually described
- Vertical lines between the brows, often called "the elevens"
- Horizontal lines across the forehead
- Lines visible during expression only, which are dynamic
- Lines visible with the face fully relaxed, which are static
What contributes to them
- Repeated contraction of the corrugator, procerus and frontalis muscles
- Squinting against sunlight, glare and reflected light
- Cumulative ultraviolet exposure over years
- Natural shifts in the skin's collagen and elastin with age
- Individual anatomy, which varies a great deal among people
How Frown Lines and Forehead Wrinkles Develop
Frown lines and forehead wrinkles come from the muscles that raise your eyebrows and pull them together, expressions you make thousands of times a day. The skin creases along the same lines each time. Squinting against snow glare or summer sun adds to it, which is why sun protection matters here year round.
How to Prevent and Treat Frown Lines
- Wear sunglasses year round to cut the squinting that deepens these lines.
- Use daily sun protection, including on bright winter days.
- Ask about neurotoxin, Botox®, Dysport®, or Xeomin®, for lines driven by muscle movement.
- Ask about medical-grade skin care or SkinPen® microneedling where skin quality is the concern.
Frown Lines & Forehead Wrinkles: common questions
What is the difference between a dynamic and a static wrinkle?
A dynamic line appears only when you make an expression and disappears when the face relaxes. A static line is visible when the face is completely at rest. The two respond differently to treatment, which is why a provider assesses which is which before suggesting anything.
How long does Botox® take to work?
BOTOX® Cosmetic generally takes about two weeks to reach its full effect. Your provider will discuss what to expect and when at your consultation.
